A Durban city wedding is always full of character, and as a wedding photographer this is one of my most memorable weddings because it combined heartfelt intimacy, unexpected challenges, and the vibrant spirit of Durban itself. The Marsh wedding was a story that unfolded across the city from quiet family moments to grand architectural backdrops, ending with an unforgettable dinner.
Planning a Durban City Wedding from Australia
The Marshes planned their big day from Australia, navigating time zones, endless video calls, and long-distance decision-making. Their dedication to bringing together family and friends from around the world was inspiring. When I finally met them in person, I could see how much thought had gone into ensuring the wedding truly reflected who they were a modern, city-loving couple with a deep connection to Durban.

Navigating a Durban City Wedding during the KZN Floods for Bridal Portraits
On the day, Durban had been shaken by the devastating KZN floods. Roads were waterlogged, and the city’s usual rhythms were interrupted. Yet, in true Marsh fashion, the couple embraced the circumstances with grace. For bridal portraits, we carefully chose spots where the light was gentle, the water glistened, and the city showed its resilience. What could have been a challenge became a moment of strength and beauty a reminder that love carries on, no matter the storm.

Groom Prep at His Brother’s House
I joined the groom at his brother-in-law's home. These moments were filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the kind of family dynamics that make storytelling so rich. The groom, surrounded by his brother and groomsmen, enjoyed an atmosphere that was both laid-back and supportive. From adjusting ties to quiet toasts, these photographs became an important reflection of family bonds on the wedding day.

A Durban City Mansion Couple Shoot
For the couple shoot, we ventured into one of Durban’s historic mansions. The architecture, with its sweeping staircases, high ceilings, and vintage character, contrasted beautifully with the couple’s modern elegance. Photographing them against such a grand backdrop created images that felt cinematic, timeless, and deeply rooted in the history of the city they love.

Dinner at Village Table
The celebration ended with dinner at one of Durban’s most memorable culinary landmarks, Village Table. With its vibrant atmosphere and renowned cuisine, it was the perfect setting for laughter, storytelling, and the kind of relaxed joy that lingers long after the plates are cleared. Capturing the toasts and candid moments here reminded me that weddings are not just ceremonies, they’re experiences shared over food, wine, and love.
The Marsh wedding was everything I love about being a wedding photographer: resilience, intimacy, and the beauty of weaving personal stories into the fabric of a city. Durban gave us challenges and gifts in equal measure, and together they created a wedding I’ll carry with me always.
